International Balzan Prize for the Promotion of Research

Since 1961, the International Balzan Prize Foundation rewards outstanding scientists in the humanities and natural sciences as well as personalities from the field of arts and culture with a total amount of 3 Mio. Swiss Francs to fund research projects.

Based on an agreement for the joint promotion of scientific research and the dissemination of its results, the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences organise alternately every second year the „Annual Balzan Lecture“, the „Interdisciplinary Forum of Balzan Prize Winners“ and the „International Interdisciplinary Research Laboratory“.

The 2019 Balzan Prizewinners are:

  • Michael Cook (UK), Princeton University (USA),
    Islamic Studies
  • Luigi Ambrosio (Italy), Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa,
    Theory of Partial Differential Equations
  • Research Group Erika von Mutius, Klaus F. Rabe, Werner Seeger, Tobias Welt 
    (Germany),
    Pathophysiology of respiration: from basic sciences to the bedside.

14. November 2019, Balzan Prizewinners Interdisciplinary Forum
  • 13:00 – 17:50 Presentations by the Balzan Prizewinners, Yehudi Menuhin Forum (free entry, registration)
  • 17:50 – 19:00 Apéritif
15. November 2019, Balzan Awards Ceremony, Federal Palace (with invitation)
